Emma, 18 (originally appeared in Daughters, Book 1, The Heartbreak of Human Trafficking; she remains a strong female lead throughout the series.) Six months have gone by. She and her new best friend, Alexis, leave the safety of Abundance, Montana, and the home of her foster father, Bailey Forbes, to head 200 miles back out into the cold world. Emma's college goal is Child Psychology and Criminal Justice, so that she can help other young girls in trouble. The University of Montana, Wyman, should be safe. After all, it's a university, with security guards and campus police, and professors, and many other adults to look after the new students.
All the other young girls rescued have been living in Bailey's house plus Bailey's employer, Lance's house, while they get their lives back in order. By the end of the six months most of the girls have either returned to their parents, or have a job at Abundance, and have rented a house with the option to buy.
Bailey and Heather (now recovered from her bullet wound) are planning their wedding. Everybody is happy and moving forward with their lives.
Unfortunately, Emma's past comes back to haunt her right there on the college campus. Alexis tells her she should call Bailey, but Emma determines to take care of things herself.
And she might be able to, because both she and Alexis have taken a night course for self-defense, which includes Taekwondo.
Emma changes a bit in Book 2. For instance she swears quite a bit, but remember what happened to her in Book 1. And then to spend six months in safety with her new daddy, and then she and new best friend Alexis go back out into the cold and sometimes dark world. Emma has never had a real (and good) boyfriend, but right away at their new home in college she spies a boy she thinks she will like. She's ready for action on the 'love' front.
Luckily her good and really sensible friend, Alexis, is there to keep things real.

This is the second book in the Daughters series by James.
I think of all the 5 five, I've read 4, including this one. The story is heartbreaking, of a girl names Emma sold into slavery. This book is where Emma takes back her life. She now learns to defend herself and in the process will move o to help others (as you will see in the upcoming books). This is truly an inspiration to women who have been through similar experiences, that there is hope.
Emma Gets Payback will have you cheering for the MC as she tackles the people who hurt her. It's great read.
