Excerpt from the Book
“As a breed, Labradors tend to be active, rambunctious dogs, especially when young, though they may mellow a bit with age. They generally have friendly, outgoing personalities and are intelligent and eager to please their owners. This breed typically gets along well with other pets (including cats), and they often enjoy play dates that allow them to socialize with other dogs. They normally get along well with people and make good pets for kids because of their gentle and tolerant dispositions.”

As an owner of some spirited Labradors, I am always interested in reading about the best dog breed in the world. This book was a good all-around resoure for new owners of Labs. The training section was very thorough and was packed with tips for everyday use. I especially like the "Be a Tree" tip for managing rowdy Labs around children- and am looking forward to usining that with my nieces and nephews.
Let's face it- Labs eat anything and when faced with typical Lab food motivation, verbal commands just don't do enough. The author doesn't mention any additional training tools beyond verbal commands- what about static mats or remote training collars for managing that strong Lab food drive? Even after crate training and minimizing opportunity for my Lab's first 2 years, he still counter surfed with the best of them. Thank goodness for the static mat and training collar, or I'd have holes in my pantry!

I grew up with Labs and won't let one pass me on the sidewalk without saying hi! Obviously I feel like I'm an expert in my own right, which is why I was so impressed with this book. I found so many new and insightful topics about Labs particularly the importance of socialization. Labs are good natured from the start but applying a few of these learnings will bring out the sweet, caring side and help moderate the excessive energy these breeds have (especially as young adults). There are always new and amazing things we can learn about our furry best friends and that's why I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
It's worth a read for new and current owners of dogs. I always read different books because there is always something new you might learn from them.
This book goes over all aspects of life for your dog, which is great.
"Labrador Retrievers - How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend", by Lorie A. Houston, DVM
The author has done an excellent job presenting a thorough detailing of what a Labrador needs from the person that cares for and loves him or her. And it is clear that the author loves Labradors and is an advocate for the rewards of having a Labrador in your life. There is a great amount of helpful knowledge in this book that will help all dog owners with their dogs. And if you read it, you may wind up with a Labrador as your next dog; in the meantime, you will be able to give greater care to the dog you currently care for and love!
It is good to know that a series of books are available to help inform and guide people that want to be responsible, knowledgeable, and compassionate dog guardians.

MY THOUGHTS
REALLY LIKED IT
Labs really are the perfect breed and this is a quick reference that anyone considering the breed should read BEFORE they get a pet or as an excellent reference for an older dog. Our first dog after my don was born was a rescued Lab that came from questionable background. She was promptly named Raisin and was the most gentle, patient dog I have ever owned. Although the breed is pretty excitable as a puppy, with enough exercise - just like kids -- they behave and are calm. This short book covers all of the important parts of taking care, training and behavior issues that come with a puppy or even an adult dog that is adopted. This is a must read for anyone considering the breed. Oh yes, it even covers shedding, something I hadn't counted on with my lab.
This is a good read. Applies to all breeds, not all specific to Labs. But it has useful information for those interested in getting a Lab.
I've been a dog owner my entire life and usually pick up dog books to see if there is anything new I can learn.
This one had a few items that were helpful. If you are new dog owner, or like dogs, this is a book for you.
Very useful information. We have lots of experience fostering and training dogs. Even so it's always good to review and consider other views. We are a little more firm with dogs than the author but it was a good read.
