Brooklyn, New York poet Cynthia Manick earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the New School and won fellowships from Cave Canem, the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop, Fine Arts Work Center, the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts & Sciences, Hedgebrook, Poets House, and the Vermont Studio Center. She serves as East Coast Editor of the independent press Jamii Publishing; and is Founder and Curator of the reading series Soul Sister Revue. Her poems have been published in a wide selection of collections including the African American Review, St. Ann’s Review, The Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere.
One aspect of the gifted poet whose works burst forth from the covers of this moving collection is her ability to speak to that aspect of being Black as in movements such as Black Life Matters – here, as well as the many places where people carry banners and flags. The only difference is that these poems are intensely personal and speak to the eloquence of being Black.
Cynthia Manick has opened windows through which we can view the Black mind sensitively, but these poems go far beyond apotheoses to being Black these are richly sculpted treasures that stand with the finest in American poetry today. Grady Harp, September 16
